NOAA Ocean Explorer Resource Series Added to NCLOR

NOAA LogoThe National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has developed a set of 15 interactive multimedia presentations and learning activities that address topics ranging from Chemosynthesis and Hydrothermal Vent Life and Deep-sea Benthos to Food, Water and Medicine from the Sea. This set of resources are now a resource series in the NCLOR.

The NCCCS courses that could be enhanced by using these resources are:  GEL111, GEL120, GEL220, MSC160, MSC172, EGY3000, AQU111, and ENV228.

To access this series, you can do any of the following:

Princeton University Video Lecture Series Added to NCLOR

Princeton University LogoToday, 40 new video lectures were added to the NCLOR from Princeton University. These resources are video captures of their famous public lecture series and include lectures  given by Tom Brokaw, Noam Chomsky, Former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, and Dr. Cornel West just to name a few. The subjects included in this series are broad and include: Political Science, Finance, Biology, Literature, Religion, and Physics.

Open Yale Courses Resource Series Updated

Open Yale Courses Logo The Yale Open Courses Resource Series was updated today with 17 new courses. Open Yale Courses provide free and open access to a selection of introductory courses taught by distinguished teachers and scholars at Yale University. The new course resources include all video lectures and  course syllabi for the year the courses were offered at the institution. The list of the Yale courses along with the recommended NCCCS course the resource may enhance are outlined in the chart below.

Khan Academy Resource Series Updated in NCLOR

khan logoThe NCLOR’s  Khan Academy Resource Series was updated with over 300 new humanities video tutorial resources. The History, Art History, and American Civics subject areas have been added to this great series.  The Khan Academy is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation award winning not-for-profit organization with the goal of changing education for the better. Each video in this series is a digestible chunk of information, approximately 10 minutes long, closed captioned, and especially purposed for viewing on the computer.

To access the Khan Academy Resource Series:

  1. log into the NCLOR  < www.explorethelor.org > or through your institution’s learning management system
  2. navigate to the Browse by Resource Series area
  3. click on the Khan Academy series.

PhET Resource Series Updated

PHET Logo Fourteen new Physics Education Technology (PhET) simulation resources  have been added to the NCLOR. The topics included in these new resources are Physics, Chemistry, Biology  and Earth Science. The new resources join the other excellent resources from this  The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and The National Science Foundation award winning educational program.

NC BioNetwork Collection Updated

NC BioNetwork LogoSix new learning resources have been added to the NC BioNetwork collection of the NCLOR. The newly added resources included in this addition are: Performance Verification of an Analytical Balance (video), Strawberry DNA Extraction (video), pH Meter Calibration (video), Manufacturing Safety & Awareness (tutorial), Preparing for the Professional Interview (tutorial) and the VINSIM – Virtual Vineyard (Simulation). These new resources join the other 53 outstanding resource also included in the NC BioNetwork collection.

Nobel Prize Educational Resources Added to NCLOR

Nobel Prize LogoThirty-four new resources were added to the NCLOR from Nobel Prize Education at Nobelprize.org.  Of these, 29 were interactive learning games of various sorts and degrees of difficulties. Most of them also include additional readings about the subject. The subjects included in this resources series are Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature and Peace Prize related material.

Football & Fast Cars: National Science Foundation Resource Series

National Science Foundation LogoA new resource series from the National Science Foundation is now available in the NCLOR. This series initially  includes two video collections of the Science of NFL Football® and the Science of Speed (NASCAR)®. These video series explores the science behind two of America’s most popular sporting events.

Science of NFL Football LogoSummary: NBC News’ educational arm, NBC Learn, has teamed up with NSF and the National Football League® to release the “Science of NFL Football®”–an informative 10-part video series that explores the science behind America’s most beloved sport.
Accessibility: Closed Captioned Instructional Materials: Lesson Plan available for each episode.

Science of Speed LogoSummary: You can’t win NASCAR® races without getting the science right. NSF has partnered with NASCAR® in the production of the “Science of Speed”, a fast-paced 12-part video series that explains the scientific principles that are so essential to the NASCAR® experience. History Animated Resource Series Updated

Nine new animations were added to the History Animated resource series. Of the newly added animations, six relate to World War II  battles in Europe including  Rommel’s battles in North Africa. The Battle of Monmouth and the French and Indian War animations were additions to the Revolutionary War series and the Battle of Wilson’s Creek is the new addition to the Civil War series.

The History Animated resource series is open to everyone including guests.

VLC Webinar Series Added to NCLOR

Six Virtual Learning Community webinars were added to the NC Community College collection this week. This series consists of links to the archives of the webinars as they were given in April of 2011.   The topics covered in this series were: Exploring the NCLOR, Using VLC Courses, Using Rubrics, Creating Quality Online Courses, Writing Measurable Outcomes and Understanding SACS & Student Learning Outcomes. Each webinar is approximately 40 minutes in duration and uses the Adobe Connect player in the web browser.

This webinar series is only available to the North Carolina community college faculty and staff.

The NCCCS faculty and staff can access this series by logging in the NCLOR directly or through their college’s learning management system and enter “VLC Webinar” in the basic search field.
