Periodic Table of Videos collection added to the NCLOR

Tables charting the chemical elements have been around since the 19th century – but this modern version has a short video about each one.

This resource series is a collection of short video clips that explain all 118 elements. This project was devised by Brady Haran, a BBC-trained video journalist, who had spent a year filming University of Nottingham scientists at work.The approach was unconventional: no scripts or storyboards, but a passionate desire to appeal to a general audience. An effective format rapidly evolved: Haran interviewed “The Professor” (Martyn Poliakoff) or lanthanide and actinide chemist Stephen Liddle in their offices, with separately filmed laboratory experiments carried out by chemists Peter Licence or Deborah Kays.

This series is available to everyone in the NCLOR including guests and all videos include closed captions.

NC School of Science and Math Adds 500+ New Resources to NCLOR

The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics has added over 500 new learning resources to their resource series in the NCLOR. The topics included in this installment of resources are: Algebra, Calculus, Chemistry, History, Physics, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry, and Statistics. The format of the new resources are videos, animations and documents. The resources included this addition are the very ones used in the NCSSM Online program.

NC School of Science and Math Adds Instructional Music Videos to NCLOR

The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics has added 95 new instructional videos to the NCLOR. The videos include music theory and how to play music on a variety of instruments. The video’s by Scott Laird & Phillip Riggs, instructors at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, cover a range of musical instruments. Some of the instruments covered in this series are: Guitar, Cello, Jass Bass, Violin, Viola, …and more.

This series is available to everyone in the NCLOR including guests.

Open Education Week: Wikiwijs, an Example of a National Strategy on OER

In the Netherlands, Wikiwijs has to be the place where all teachers of the Netherlands, ranging from primary education to higher education, can (co)develop, share, rework and use digital learning materials, published under an open license. The Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science took the initiative to realize this platform in 2009. The Open Universiteit and Kennisnet are currently implementing the platform. In this video you can gain more insight into the ideas behind Wikiwijs and the way it is realized.

Open Education Week: Orange Grove Text Plus (Open Textbooks)

This video explains the benefit of adopting open access textbooks in higher education. In response to the high cost of college textbooks, Florida’s statewide Orange Grove Repository established a unique partnership with the University Press of Florida in 2009 to form Orange Grove Texts Plus (OGT+). Through OGT+, all students have access to their instructional materials in the format that they choose and on the device that they select.

Open Education Week: The Future is Open

This is a great video of Larry Cooperman discussing the future of higher education. This is Cooperman’s TEDx presentation from June 16, 2011 in Medellin, Colombia titled, “The Future is Open,” addresses the movement towards making free educational materials from the world’s leading universities available to the public. In this video, Cooperman talks about distance education, open textbooks and open peer learning like UniversidadP2P (Peer-to-Peer University) which is the largest online educational community worldwide, inspired by the philosophy of free exchange of content on the network. Undoubtedly one of the authorities in the field of virtual education in the world.

Open Educational Week: The Value of Use Video

This video gives an overview of the findings of the JISC OER Impact project at Oxford University. It analyzed the link between the value of use and its impact in teaching and learning. OpenCourseWare Consortium announces Open Education Week March 5-10, 2012

The first ever Open Education Week is taking place from 5-10 March 2012 online and in locally hosted events around the world. Open Education Week is being coordinated by the OpenCourseWare Consortium. The purpose of Open Education Week is to raise awareness of the open education movement and its impact on teaching and learning worldwide. Participation in all events and use of all resources is free an open to anyone.

“The vision of the open education movement is to create a world in which the desire to learn is fully met by the opportunity to do so, where everyone, everywhere, is able to access affordable, educationally and culturally appropriate opportunities to gain whatever knowledge or training they desire. The movement encompasses producing, sharing, using and modifying content, as well as innovative models of educational delivery,” said Mary Lou Forward, executive director of the OpenCourseWare Consortium. “Open Education Week will showcase projects, resources, people and ideas so that people around the world can see the breadth of what has been accomplished already, and participate in discussions about the future of the movement.”

National Science Foundation adds Science of NHL Hockey and Olympic Winter Games

The National Science Foundation resource series has added two new special video reports. The Science of NHL Hockey® and the Science of Olympic Winter Games joins the other two video collections already available ( NFL Football® and the Science of Speed (NASCAR)®). These video series explores the science behind some of America’s most popular sporting events.

Summary: The National Science Foundation, in partnership with NBC Learn and NBC Sports and the National Hockey League, explore the science and math behind professional hockey in this 9 part video series.

Accessibility: Closed Captioned

Summary: NBC Learn has teamed up with the National Science Foundation to produce Science of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, a 16-part video series that explores the science behind individual Olympic events.
