UMass Boston – OpenCourseWare Added to OER Collection


UMass Boston logoToday, 43 new courses from UMass Boston – OpenCourseWare were added to the open educational resources collection within the NCLOR. UMass Boston OpenCourseWare is a free and open educational resource for faculty, students, and self-learners world wide. The idea behind University of Massachusetts Boston OCW is to make University of Massachusetts Boston course materials that are used in the teaching of undergraduate and graduate subjects available on the Web, free of charge, to any user anywhere in the world.

This series includes a wide variety of course topics but the content focused on biology, chemistry, math, education, as well as arts & sciences and engineering.

UNC Cancer Network Lectures Added to NCLOR


UNC_Cancer_Network3 Today, twenty-two new video lectures were added to the open educational resource collection of the NCLOR. The UNC Cancer Network is provided by the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and the UNC at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. The mission of the UNC Cancer Network to provide scalable mechanisms for delivering oncology-related programs in education and research to healthcare practitioners, practitioners-in-training, and the public that will lead to reductions in morbidity and mortality from cancer and cancer-related illness in North Carolina.

With this mission in mind, the UNC Cancer Network has created various one hour lectures cancer health professionals speak about cancer related topics. The available lectures are categorized into two series: the RN and Allied Health lectures and the Community College Oncology lectures.

  • RN and Allied Health Lectures – These lectures focus on putting theory into practice for those responsible for the direct care of cancer patients (nurses, advanced practice nurses, radiology and radiation oncology technicians, social workers, dietitians, physical therapists, speech therapists, etc.). Special attention is given to equip nurses and allied health professionals with tools they need to be successful when caring for cancer patients.
  • Community Lunch and Learn Lectures – These lectures are focused on providing information to the general public about cancer, prevention, survivor-ship, and other health-related topics. The content is designed for cancer patients, survivors, friends, family, care givers and allied health professionals.

Tufts OpenCourseWare resources added to OER collection


Today, fifty-four resources available from Tufts University’s OpenCourseWare project was added to the NCLOR. Tufts OpenCourseWare is part of an  educational movement initiated by MIT that provides free access to course content for everyone online. Tufts’ course offerings demonstrate the University’s strength in the life sciences in addition to its multidisciplinary approach, international perspective and underlying ethic of service to its local, national and international communities. This series includes a wide variety of course topics but the content focused on human, dental, and veterinary medicine, as well as arts & sciences and engineering.

GaTech Biology Resources added to the NCLOR


GeTech BiologyToday, two new Biology courses were added to the Open Educational Resources collection in the NCLOR. Georgia Tech Biology has made  74 resources available in the nine modules.

The courses made available in are:

  • BIOL 1510 – Biological Principles. An introduction to the basic principles of modern biology, including biomacromolecules, bioenergetics, cell structure, genetics, homeostasis, evolution, and ecological relationships.
  • BIOL 1520 – Introduction to Organismal Biology. An introduction to biology at the organ and organismal levels, with emphasis on physiological processes and integration of growth and development.

Georgia Virtual Learning Content Added to OER Collection in NCLOR


Today, over 1100 individual learning modules were added to the open educational resources collection within the NCLOR. This series has been made available from the Georgia Department of Education. The Georgia Virtual Learning (GVL) is a large online repository of learning content used for online instruction. The virtual courses included in this series serve a wide array of student learning styles through interactive and engaging learning content that’s designed for best practice and flexibility. The resources included in this series are the “shared” or the open educational resources created for the Georgia Virtual Learning instruction. There are 94 complete courses included in this collection, in subjects such as: Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education, Fine Arts, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Sciences, and World Languages.

The courses were created by Georgia Department of Education faculty. They are organized in modular format (SoftChalk) with audio/video interactive features and built in navigation. Specific attention was paid regarding ADA compliance with the inclusion of closed caption/audio features as well as universal design.

TED Ed series added to NCLOR


Today, 240 videos from TED Ed were made available in the Open Educational Resources collection in the NCLOR. TED-Ed is TED’s (Technology, Entertainment and Design) youth and education initiative. Most of the resources made available are TED-Ed Originals. These resources are short, award-winning animated videos about ideas that spark the curiosity of learners. The videos also include quizzes, more detailed information, and a discussion area under the: Think, Dig Deeper, Discuss links respectively. Some of the subjects included in this series are: mathematics, biology, history, literature, and health.

University of Nottingham’s – HELM Open health services collection added to NCLOR


periodic table logoToday, 180 new Health eLearning Media (HELM) Open resources were made available in the NCLOR’s Open Educational Resource Collection. This new series contains nursing and health services content. The HELM Open learning and teaching resources are high quality, interactive peer-reviewed resources developed by University experts over a 10 year period. HELM resources provide 15 minutes each of engaging multimedia bite-sized learning for you to use in your learning and teaching. This collection is a series of nursing and health services related items.

The some of the subjects covered in this series are; Nursing, Death and dying, Pharmacology, Physical and occupational therapy, Geriatric Nursing, Public health, Disease, and Physiology.

CyArk 3D Objects Resource Series Added to the Open Collection


Today, 122 new resources from CyArk.org has been added to the NCLOR’s Open Educational Resources collection. CyArk was founded in 2003 to ensure heritage sites are available to future generations while making them uniquely accessible today. CyArk operates internationally as a non-profit organization with the mission of using new technologies to create a free, 3D online library of the world’s cultural heritage sites before they are lost to natural disasters, destroyed by human aggression or ravaged by the passage of time. The subjects included in this series are; Archeology, Architecture, U.S. History, World History and Historic Preservation.
