Georgia Virtual Learning Content Added to OER Collection in NCLOR


Today, over 1100 individual learning modules were added to the open educational resources collection within the NCLOR. This series has been made available from the Georgia Department of Education. The Georgia Virtual Learning (GVL) is a large online repository of learning content used for online instruction. The virtual courses included in this series serve a wide array of student learning styles through interactive and engaging learning content that’s designed for best practice and flexibility. The resources included in this series are the “shared” or the open educational resources created for the Georgia Virtual Learning instruction. There are 94 complete courses included in this collection, in subjects such as: Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education, Fine Arts, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Sciences, and World Languages.

The courses were created by Georgia Department of Education faculty. They are organized in modular format (SoftChalk) with audio/video interactive features and built in navigation. Specific attention was paid regarding ADA compliance with the inclusion of closed caption/audio features as well as universal design.

TED Ed series added to NCLOR


Today, 240 videos from TED Ed were made available in the Open Educational Resources collection in the NCLOR. TED-Ed is TED’s (Technology, Entertainment and Design) youth and education initiative. Most of the resources made available are TED-Ed Originals. These resources are short, award-winning animated videos about ideas that spark the curiosity of learners. The videos also include quizzes, more detailed information, and a discussion area under the: Think, Dig Deeper, Discuss links respectively. Some of the subjects included in this series are: mathematics, biology, history, literature, and health.

TED-Ed’s mission is to spark and celebrate the ideas of teachers and students around the world. UCI Open Content added to OER collection


uci_open_bluesmToday, seventy resources from UCI Open was added to the open educational resource series collection in the NCLOR. The University of California, Irvine’s UCI Open is a web-based repository of various UC Irvine courses and video lectures from UC Irvine faculty, seminar participants, and instructional staff. While the great majority of courses are drawn from graduate, undergraduate, and continuing education programs, some were originally produced under grant funding to serve specific needs in California and elsewhere. UCI Open is open and available to the world for free.

The resources added in this series are complete courses that include materials such as; lecture videos, presentations, handouts, and practice assessments. The course resources in this series are from disciplines that include: Arts, Biological Sciences, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, Humanities, Physical Sciences, Social Ecology, and Social Sciences.

C3BC Biology Resources added to NCLOR


The Community College Consortium for Biosciences Credentialsc3bc logo (c3bc) located at Forsyth Technical Community College (Forsyth Tech), has made the Biology 112 course available within the NCLOR. Forsyth Tech along with a Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training grant (DOL TAACCCT),  has redeveloped the introductory bioscience courses in order to reduce barriers to student success.  The latest course available is the “General Biology II (BIO 112)” course consists of structured learning objects.

This course is a continuation of BIO 111. Emphasis is placed on organisms, evolution, biodiversity, plant and animal systems, ecology, and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate comprehension of life at the organismal and ecological levels. The content has been organized in units and module for ease of use and for supplementing current Biology courses.

New Science and Math eBooks from Siyavula added to NCLOR


siyavula-logo-tiny Today, 14 new open textbooks (eBooks) from Siyavula Education were added to the open educational resources collection in the NCLOR. Siyavula Education is South African based organization dedicated to creating and enabling engaging, integrated, high-quality learning experiences in Mathematics and the Sciences for learners and teachers in South Africa and globally. The set of 14 textbooks are completely open and free to use. All resources are Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported licensed.

The subjects covered in this resource series are: Earth science, Physics, Chemistry, Biological and life sciences, Algebra, Trigonometry, Statistics, Probability, and Math literacy.

Science Friday Series Added to NCLOR


scifri_icon2Today, the NCLOR added a 100+ video series from Science Friday (SciFri). For 25 years SciFri introduced top scientists to public radio listeners, and reminded them how much fun it is to learn something new. But it is more than just a radio show. They produce award-winning digital videos, original web articles, and educational resources for teachers and informal educators. All of the work is independently produced by the Science Friday Initiative, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the public’s access to science and scientific information. Public Radio International (PRI) distributes the radio show, which you can catch on public radio stations across the U.S.

The videos in this series include topics in the subjects of: Arts, Biology, Chemistry, Design, Earth Science, Engineering, Food Science, Health, and Physics.

Virtual Cell Animation Resource Series Updated in NCLOR


The Virtual Cell Animation resource series has been updated in the NCLOR. This resource series from the World Wide Web Instructional Committee at North Dakota State University is a set of high-quality animations of molecular and cellular processes. This collection has been developed to introduce students to new concepts. By walking through the still images and a movie included for each topic, viewers are in control of choosing the learning style that best fits their needs.

There are a total of 25 resources included in this series on the topics of molecular and cellular processes as well as cellular energy conversion. The animations added with this update include: Glycolysis – Overview, Glycolysis Reactions, The Citric Acid Cycle – Overview, The Citric Acid Cycle – Reactions, and Energy Consumption.

All items in this resource series now have a YouTube video (closed captioned) and a flash-based movie of each animation, a zip file of annotated still images from the animations, and a text file of the animation narration (where needed).

C3BC Chemistry Resources added to NCLOR

This course introduces the fundamental concepts of inorganic chemistry. Topics include measurement, matter and energy, atomic and molecular structure, nuclear chemistry, stoichiometry, chemical formulas and reactions, chemical bonding, gas laws, solutions, and acids and bases. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of chemistry as it applies to other fields.  The content has been organized in units and module for ease of use and for supplementing current CHM 131 courses.

CK-12 Resource Series Updated in NCLOR


CK 12 logoDue to a resource reorganization at CK-12, the NCLOR needed to re-catalog all the resources available from the CK-12 foundation. The FlexBooks® currently available (72), have now been downloaded to the NCLOR directly in PDF and ePub formats. To view the files you will need a pdf reader or an iOS device, Android device or ePub reader to view the ePub files. All older versions of the resources in the CK-12 series have been archived.

FlexBook® textbooks are CK-12’s open source digital textbooks.

The CK-12 Foundation is a non-profit organization with a mission to reduce the cost of textbook materials for the K-12 market both in the U.S. and worldwide. Eight New NROC Collections Added to the NCLOR

The content available in the NCLOR from NROC has been updated with eight new collections. The eight new collections are: The Concord Consortium Collection, NMSU Learning Games Lab Collection, Mt. San Jacinto College Collection, Chattanooga State Technical College Collection, BioInteractive Collection, APES in a Box Collection, Virginia Historical Society Collection, and NASA eClips Collection. The NROC Project provides core academic rich multimedia content–videos, animations, and simulations–on general education subjects to middle-school, high-school teachers, college professors and their students. Over 490 new resources have been added to the NROC collection. These resources join the other 2,800+ items already available for NCCCS faculty use.


 

The Concord Consortium Logo The Concord Consortium is a collection of Revolutionary Digital Learning items for Science, Engineering, and Math. This course is designed for anyone who wants to become a better writer. If you need to write more clearly for work, prepare for a placement test for a college, or improve your skills for current writing projects, this class is beneficial. NMSU Learning Games Lab Logo New Mexico State University Learning Games Lab collection offers Math Snacks: Animations and Games for Middle School. Math Snacks are short animations and mini-games designed to present mathematics in a very different way. APES in a BOX Logo APES in a BOX collection contain AP Environmental Science Review courses. APES in a Box is an all-inclusive study guide for the AP Environmental Science exam.
