CK-12 Resource Series Updated in NCLOR


CK 12 logoDue to a resource reorganization at CK-12, the NCLOR needed to re-catalog all the resources available from the CK-12 foundation. The FlexBooks® currently available (72), have now been downloaded to the NCLOR directly in PDF and ePub formats. To view the files you will need a pdf reader or an iOS device, Android device or ePub reader to view the ePub files. All older versions of the resources in the CK-12 series have been archived.

FlexBook® textbooks are CK-12’s open source digital textbooks.

The CK-12 Foundation is a non-profit organization with a mission to reduce the cost of textbook materials for the K-12 market both in the U.S. and worldwide. Using an open-content, web-based collaborative model termed the FlexBook®, CK-12 intends to pioneer the generation and distribution of high-quality educational content that will serve both as core text as well as provide an adaptive environment for learning.

Except as otherwise noted, all CK-12 Content is made available to users in accordance with the Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial 3.0 Unported (CC BY-NC 3.0) License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/), as amended and updated by Creative Commons from time to time (the “CC License”), which is incorporated herein by this reference.

NC DPI K-12 Vetted collection added to the NCLOR


NC DPI LogoThe North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NC DPI) has now added over 9,600 resources to the NCLOR. This collection is the result of the ongoing collaboration between the NC Community College System and NC Department of Public Instruction (K-12). All resources in this collection have been vetted by K-12 subject matter experts and tagged to Common Core and NC Essential standards. This collection includes resources from all subject areas of the standard course of study for K-12 in North Carolina. These subjects include: Arts Education, Career Technical Education, Engineering, English as a Second Language, English Language Arts, Healthful Living, Information and Technology, Mathematics, Professional Development, Science, Social Studies, and World Languages. The collection is available for all K-12 and Community College educators in North Carolina.

This collection will also be made available via Home Base the statewide, instructional improvement (IIS) and student information system (SIS) for teachers, students, parents and administrators.

Accessing Content: To find this content you can log into the NCLOR and do any of the following:

  • Freetext Search the State Vetted K-12 Resources Collection from the “Within” dropdown list on the search page.
  • Browse by NC DPI Subject: Click on Browse by NC DPI Subject, then select a subject from the list.

Stanford Center for Professional Development Resource Series Added to NCLOR


Stanford University Center for Professional DevelopmentThe NCLOR now has 26 new video seminars from the Stanford Center for Professional Development (SCPD). SCPD is a part of the school of Engineering at Stanford University and connects professionals worldwide to the research and teaching of university faculty. Currently, there are five topics in this seminar series. The topics include; Engineering and Climate Change, Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders, Topics in International Technology Management, Human Computer Interaction, and Computer Systems Colloquium. The guest lecturers in this series include Melinda Gates, Peter Norvig from Google and many others.

Open eTextbook series now available in the NCLOR


etextbook logoA new eTextbook resource series is now available in the NCLOR. Initially, there are 17 open eTextbooks available in the series, but we will be expanding on the collection in the near future. All of the etexbooks are open and FREE to use. The subjects included in this series are:  business, mathematics, chemistry, psychology, physics, marketing and many others. The majority of the eTextbooks are from the Connexions Repository at Rice University and have been endorsed by the Community College Open Textbook Collaborative.

The eTextbooks in this series are loaded to the NCLOR in multiple formats which include PDF, ePUB and links to online versions. The PDF versions of the eTextbooks are viewable on any PC and Mac computer and most mobile devices. The ePUB format is specifically designed to be viewed with mobile devices such as tablets and smart phones.  For more information about devices that can read the ePUB format, click here.

Curiosity Mars Rover Materials Added to NASA Resources

In advance of the upcoming Mars Science Laboratory landing on August 5, the NCLOR Staff has updated the NASA open educational resources. The majority of the new resources have information about the Mars rover missions.

About Curiosity:
NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory mission is the most ambitious, complex mission in the history of robotic space exploration. On August 5, the mission will set down a large, mobile laboratory – the dune buggy-sized Curiosity rover – using a new form of precision landing technology that makes many of Mars’ most intriguing regions viable destinations for the first time.

The types of NASA resources included in this update are: images, videos, PDF documents, and interactive resources.

Open Learning Initiative Resource Series Added to NCLOR


OLI LogoFourteen courses from the Open Learning Initiative were added to the NCLOR.  The Open Learning Initiative (OLI), based at Carnegie Mellon University, is an open educational resources project that strives to transform instruction, significantly improve learning outcomes and to achieve significant increases in productivity in post secondary education. The Open Learning Initiative is supported by the National Science Foundation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and others.

The topics of the courses include: Biology, Economics, Math, French, Chemistry, Engineering, and Physics. The courses are  exemplars of scientifically based online courses and course materials that enact instruction. The courses are designed based on learning science research.

The list of the courses along with the recommended NCCCS course the resource may enhance are outlined in the chart below.

Princeton University Video Lecture Series Added to NCLOR


Princeton University LogoToday, 40 new video lectures were added to the NCLOR from Princeton University. These resources are video captures of their famous public lecture series and include lectures  given by Tom Brokaw, Noam Chomsky, Former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, and Dr. Cornel West just to name a few. The subjects included in this series are broad and include: Political Science, Finance, Biology, Literature, Religion, and Physics.

New STEM related Resource Series from Wisc-Online added to the NCLOR


A new science, technology, engineering and math related resource series from Wisc-Online has been added to the NCLOR. Over 1000 learning objects  that include subjects ranging from Anatomy and Physiology to Technical Physics are available in this series. There is also a large collection of Health related learning objects as well. The learning objects in this series have been designed and developed by a team of instructional designers, editors, technicians, and student interns from the Wisconsin Technical College System.

CK-12 Flexbooks Resource Series added to the NCLOR


Twelve new ebooks have been added to the NCLOR as a resource series. The new flexbooks (ebooks) are supplied from the CK-12 Foundation. The CK-12 Foundation is a non-profit organization with a mission to reduce the cost of textbook materials for the K-12 market both in the U.S. and worldwide. Each book has multiple chapters and each chapter has been added as a NCLOR item, thus giving faculty the ability to add links to ebook chapters directly into their LMS.

NASA at 50 Video Collection added to NCLOR


The NASA at 50 collection highlights key innovations and milestones in chemistry, physics, engineering, and space exploration from NASA’s fifty-year history. Each of the 18 clips serve as a gateway for further learning in science and history and promotes critical thinking and inquiry as essential components of scientific literacy.

Students can enjoy NASA at 50 in video or audio formats that are compatible with common portable media players. In addition, teacher’s guides are provided for each clip to facilitate integration of this exciting and engaging content into lesson plans.

To access the collection: log in your LMS or the NCLOR and select Browse by Resource Series > NASA at 50 Video Collection.
