TED Ed series added to NCLOR


Today, 240 videos from TED Ed were made available in the Open Educational Resources collection in the NCLOR. TED-Ed is TED’s (Technology, Entertainment and Design) youth and education initiative. Most of the resources made available are TED-Ed Originals. These resources are short, award-winning animated videos about ideas that spark the curiosity of learners. The videos also include quizzes, more detailed information, and a discussion area under the: Think, Dig Deeper, Discuss links respectively. Some of the subjects included in this series are: mathematics, biology, history, literature, and health.

TED-Ed’s mission is to spark and celebrate the ideas of teachers and students around the world. TED-Ed’s supports learning by producing a growing library of original animated videos , provides an international platform for teachers to create their own interactive lessons, helps curious students around the globe bring TED to their schools and gain presentation literacy skills, celebrates innovative leadership within TED-Ed’s global network of over 250,000 teachers. University of Nottingham’s – HELM Open health services collection added to NCLOR


periodic table logoToday, 180 new Health eLearning Media (HELM) Open resources were made available in the NCLOR’s Open Educational Resource Collection. This new series contains nursing and health services content. The HELM Open learning and teaching resources are high quality, interactive peer-reviewed resources developed by University experts over a 10 year period. HELM resources provide 15 minutes each of engaging multimedia bite-sized learning for you to use in your learning and teaching. This collection is a series of nursing and health services related items.

The some of the subjects covered in this series are; Nursing, Death and dying, Pharmacology, Physical and occupational therapy, Geriatric Nursing, Public health, Disease, and Physiology.

UCI Open Content added to OER collection


uci_open_bluesmToday, seventy resources from UCI Open was added to the open educational resource series collection in the NCLOR. The University of California, Irvine’s UCI Open is a web-based repository of various UC Irvine courses and video lectures from UC Irvine faculty, seminar participants, and instructional staff. While the great majority of courses are drawn from graduate, undergraduate, and continuing education programs, some were originally produced under grant funding to serve specific needs in California and elsewhere. UCI Open is open and available to the world for free.

The resources added in this series are complete courses that include materials such as; lecture videos, presentations, handouts, and practice assessments. The course resources in this series are from disciplines that include: Arts, Biological Sciences, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, Humanities, Physical Sciences, Social Ecology, and Social Sciences.

Sixteen New S.T.E.M. related Courses from NC School of Science and Mathematics and NC DPI

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction in partnership with NC School of Science and Mathematics have developed sixteen open courses in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) with over 3,500 resources. These STEM courses, now available in the NCLOR, have been designed to give teachers the materials they need to teach four, full-year courses in the subjects of: Agriscience & Biotechnology, Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, Energy & Sustainability, and Health & Life Sciences. The courses are organized into topical lessons and those lessons are organized into units based on themes. Many of the units are fully integrated STEM units, meaning they contain real-world challenges and authentic assessments in science, technology, engineering and math.

New Intelecom Video Series Available in NCLOR


Intelecom LogoToday, three new subject areas from the INTELECOM video collection have been added to the NCLOR. The subject areas added include Adult Education, Allied Health and Philosophy. Over 780 new videos and video clips have been included in this addition. The new content includes nationally recognized documentary series such as: Crossroads Café, Madison Heights, Lifelines, On Common Ground, The Human Condition, and The Examined Life. All videos content included in this content are closed captioned and are available for viewing at the resource summary page and the attachment level for easy inclusion into LMS based courses.  This purchased content has been made available only to the NCCCS system. This English language learner (ELL) series blends comedy and drama to teach English to speakers of other languages. The stories feature characters whose lives intersect at Crossroad Cafe, a neighborhood restaurant, where together they experience the struggles, conflicts, joys and victories of everyday life. Each episode features “Word Play,” an animated segment demonstrating a specific language function. Culture Clips is a video series included in Crossroads Café and made up of 26 documentary-style short segments on various aspects of life in the U.S.

Madison HeightsMadison Heights

Ten half-hour dramatic episodes. Madison Heights centers around a hypothetical middle school and focuses on one or more families struggling to overcome adversity with courage, dignity and hope. Each episode addresses a particular problem, such as illiteracy, alcoholism, and welfare.

On Common GroundOn Common Ground

On Common Ground is anthology of stories that unfolds in a City Hall of a medium-sized city. This 15 episode series present dramatic stories which take on controversial issues, usually in situations that lack a single right answer. Each episode concludes with a relevant video of a key event from U.S. history. Individual lessons focus on such crucial issues as racial polarization, extremism and freedom of speech, individual rights versus the public good, separation of powers, and checks and balances.

What is the meaning of life? Does the end justify the means? – still reverberate in society today. NC DPI K-12 Vetted collection added to the NCLOR


NC DPI LogoThe North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NC DPI) has now added over 9,600 resources to the NCLOR. This collection is the result of the ongoing collaboration between the NC Community College System and NC Department of Public Instruction (K-12). All resources in this collection have been vetted by K-12 subject matter experts and tagged to Common Core and NC Essential standards. This collection includes resources from all subject areas of the standard course of study for K-12 in North Carolina. These subjects include: Arts Education, Career Technical Education, Engineering, English as a Second Language, English Language Arts, Healthful Living, Information and Technology, Mathematics, Professional Development, Science, Social Studies, and World Languages. The collection is available for all K-12 and Community College educators in North Carolina.

This collection will also be made available via Home Base the statewide, instructional improvement (IIS) and student information system (SIS) for teachers, students, parents and administrators.

National Science Foundation adds Science of NHL Hockey and Olympic Winter Games

This series initially  includes two video collections of the Science of NFL Football® and the Science of Speed (NASCAR)®. These video series explores the science behind two of America’s most popular sporting events.

New STEM related Resource Series from Wisc-Online added to the NCLOR


A new science, technology, engineering and math related resource series from Wisc-Online has been added to the NCLOR. Over 1000 learning objects  that include subjects ranging from Anatomy and Physiology to Technical Physics are available in this series. There is also a large collection of Health related learning objects as well. The learning objects in this series have been designed and developed by a team of instructional designers, editors, technicians, and student interns from the Wisconsin Technical College System.

To access this resource series:
